Avrumy Samet from Manchester is releasing a brand new hit full of hope and joy called “Chaptz Arain.” The phrase means take advantage and seize every second.  There is a deeply Jewish expression attributed to Rabbi Israel Salanter that goes as follows. “As long as the candle is lit, thing can be fixed”. It is based on the comparison between the human soul and a candle (from the verse “God’s candle is the soul of a man – נר ה׳ נשמת אדם  It symbolizes that as long as a person lives – it is never too late to repent, improve deeds and correct faults. Rabbi Israel Salanter passed by a shoemaker’s  house late at night. The cobbler worked by the light of a fading candle. When the Rebbe asked him why he was still working, the cobbler replied: “As long as the candle is burning, you can still mend the shoes.”
The Rebbe adopted the sentence as a parable for life. He realized that as long as a person’s soul is in his body (that is, “the candle is lit”), he is always able to repent and correct his ways.
This idea is the basis of many poems in culture and music, and symbolizes deep hopes for the ability to renew and change. “Mishna” משנה is the same letters of “soul” – נשמה . Let us grab another Mishna and another Mishna… Let us renew, grab, and use every minute of life…
