The Hebrew verse begins with words recited daily in the Tachanun service and most fervently in the Selichos service around the High Holidays:

שומר גוי קדוש
שמור שארית עם קדוש
ואל יאבד גוי קדוש
המשלשים בשלוש קדושות לקדוש

Guard the Holy Nation
Guard the remnant of the Holy Nation
Let the Holy Nation never be destroyed
Who praise You three-fold, who cry out “Holy are You!” three times a day,
[Who cry out to You,] the Holy One.

Then the song breaks into an original Yiddish chorus, interwoven with Hebrew verses:

באשעפער ס׳איז דא נסיונות מער און מער
און נאר דו קענסט אונז געבן די געווער
אויפצוהיטן דיין תורה און צו האבן אמת’ע מורא
שמור שארית עם קדוש

עס שטייט דאך ואתם תהיו לי
ממלכת כהנים וגוי קדוש
טאטע שיק שוין די גאולה
מיר ווילן נענטער זיין צו די שכינה
